Foraging in the grocery store

Today I went to the grocery store in search of healthy food. Whole, organic, real food.

I was amazed how fast I went through Aldies, my favorite grocery store because of their low prices. I had to pass by many items that I normally may consider.

The goal was to buy food that my grandma would recognize with less than five ingredients.

Why?

We listened to a book on CD with explains the problems of eating the typical American diet.

It is called In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.

He explains why we should eat food, not too much, and mostly plants.

In Aldies I found:

milk (without Artifical Growth Hormones)

yogurt, real cheese, cottage cheese

oatmeal (no cereals!!!) wow, this is a big change for me

crushed tomatoes

whole wheat noodles

pineapples and grapefruits on sale (these are considered okay to eat even when not organic)

sweet peas and asparagus

almonds

cranberries (I'm not sure if they are okay)

In Giant I found:

organic carrots, spinach, lettuce, parsley, applesauce

rye, whole wheat, and non-bleached all purpose flour

yeast

pork (for New year's day, although I want to find a better way to buy pork)

It felt healthy and different, passing by the cereals, crackers, and even breads! I made some whole wheat baguettes today. I don't know how I will be able to have the time to eat this way, but I want to try. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear from you.

Eating Well

We are learning about eating organic, whole, and local food. This is a fun journey.
Here are some great books from our local library we are reading:Nordic Diet by Trina Hahnemann (this is about organic and local food with great recipes and menu plan)
The Quarter-Acer Farm by Spring Warren (this also has great recipes and is the story of how she kept the patio, lost the lawn, and fed her family for a year)

Also a great website is http://www.thyhandhathprovided.com/

Stay tuned for more...

More thanks...

155. new day
156. baby growling and full of love
157. Gibbs barking
158. curious baby
159. warm fire on a cold day
160. children writing songs
161. funny boy

Again on this Monday, I am thankful. I did not want to get out of bed this morning, actually off the couch, after our sweet baby woke me at four a.m. School seemed like an impossible task, with the house messy and dishes piled in the sink.
God renewed my strength, as I began. I put one foot in front of the other, asked the children to start with their independent work, and the day began.
One moment at a time, one subject at a time, and then the morning was over.
Now Slade is finished with his Math, and Jedrek and Elena are going to sing me a song. I am thankful.
