I was amazed how fast I went through Aldies, my favorite grocery store because of their low prices. I had to pass by many items that I normally may consider.
The goal was to buy food that my grandma would recognize with less than five ingredients.
Why?
We listened to a book on CD with explains the problems of eating the typical American diet.
It is called In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.
He explains why we should eat food, not too much, and mostly plants.
In Aldies I found:
milk (without Artifical Growth Hormones)
yogurt, real cheese, cottage cheese
oatmeal (no cereals!!!) wow, this is a big change for me
crushed tomatoes
whole wheat noodles
pineapples and grapefruits on sale (these are considered okay to eat even when not organic)
sweet peas and asparagus
almonds
cranberries (I'm not sure if they are okay)
In Giant I found:
organic carrots, spinach, lettuce, parsley, applesauce
rye, whole wheat, and non-bleached all purpose flour
yeast
pork (for New year's day, although I want to find a better way to buy pork)
It felt healthy and different, passing by the cereals, crackers, and even breads! I made some whole wheat baguettes today. I don't know how I will be able to have the time to eat this way, but I want to try. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear from you.
