Today we ate homemade refried beans and rice. In Nogales, Mexico many of the people each rice and beans everyday. There is more to life than bread. Jesus is the "Bread of Life." I write a lot in this blog about food, but we were reminded, this month, of the spiritual food we need everyday, just like we need bread to live. We need Jesus, everyday.
Mike and I went to Nogales, Mexico this past month. Cuirim Outreach is a ministry that works through the local church. We are always encouraged to see what God is doing every time we go. The best part of the ministry, for me, is the time we spend throughout the day in the small chapel, where we pray, sing, memorize Scripture, and learn from Brian Donahue, the leader. Setting aside time to stop and meet with God and focus on His Word is always meaningful and powerful.
Then, we go into the neighborhood and serve God through meeting people's needs. This time, Mike, Jon, and Carlos built a soup kitchen, they call a kid's cafe, where children will come to eat, play, and learn about God. I sorted beans and rice into bags to hand out. Then, I helped with the dental clinic, where Courtney, a dental hygenist cleaned teeth. Each night we were able to have leaders in the church to the Cuirim House to share a meal and talk. Their stories and vision were amazing. On Sunday, we passed out beans and rice and attended church, shaking hands with people who love the Lord in Mexico.
It was a quick trip, but meaningful. The physical and spiritual need is real. It is wonderful to be a part of serving in God's Kingdom. It was restful, for me, being away from my children, and focusing on the Lord. We hope to return in the future, but for now, we will set aside time to grow in the Lord where we are and serve where we are.
Maybe someday, you would come along to serve and grow at the Cuirim Outreach.
