We went to our local home and garden center, Bowman's in Westminster, MD. It is the best place around that I have found to buy seeds. They have them in glass jars on the counter and you ask the salesperson for the seeds you want. The workers there know a lot about gardening and give good suggestions. Many of the seeds are heritage seeds, if you are looking for seeds that you can keep. They have great prices, too. If you don't have a good local place to buy seeds, I recommend the Sand Hill Preservation Center. I know it is early, but we were at Bowman's to get Mike's organic fruit tree sprays, so I couldn't resist buying seeds.
I also found seed potatoes there. I like Kennebec white potatoes for storing. I also always get Red Pontiac because I love red potatoes. Then, I saw they also sold blue potatoes!!! You have to get there early because they sell out. I wanted to try these last year, but online they are expensive. At Bowman's they were only $1.00 a pound. So, this year we will have red, white, and blue potatoes!
If you haven't tried growing potatoes, it is not hard. The main thing is to mound up dirt or straw on the sides of the plant as they grow. A great book that gives instructions for growing potatoes is The Farmer's Wife: Guide to Growing a Garden and Eating From it Too. My kids love helping to dig them. It is like searching for buried treasure.
